Ready Player One — Comic-Con Teaser Trailer

Steven Spielberg returns to the genre he once redefined in the '80s with the eagerly-anticipated science-fiction adventure film "Ready Player One."

It's the big-screen adaptation of the best-selling sci-fi novel by writer Ernest Cline, who, when writing the book, was heavily influenced by the pop culture references of the '80s and '90s, including classic arcade video games and the blockbuster movies of -- who else -- Steven Spielberg.

While at this year's San Diego Comic Con, Warner Bros premiered the very first trailer for the upcoming film (watch it above), which offers the first peek at Tye Sheridan (aka Cyclops from "X-Men: Apocalypse") as Wade Watts (aka Parzival), a teenage videogame player living in the dystopian year of 2045.

While his world consists of a junk pile of stacked-up trailer homes, Wade is able to escape to his alternate life inside the OASIS, a virtual reality world where players can hunt for valuable "easter eggs" left by the game's now-deceased creator, James Halliday (played by Oscar-winner Mark Rylance). Though upon his death, Halliday left a note stating that he'd buried one mysterious easter egg inside the OASIS -- and whoever finds it gets to inherit his entire fortune. And so begins Wade's Willy Wonka-like treasure hunt.

Co-starring Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Simon Pegg, Hannah John-Kamen, and T. J. Miller, "Ready Player One" is slated for a March 30, 2018 release.

The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
