Breathe — Trailer

Andrew Garfield is stricken with a debilitating and devastating illness in the debut trailer for "Breathe," the upcoming period drama based on the inspirational true story of British disability advocate Robin Cavendish.

Marking the directorial debut of motion-capture maestro Andy Serkis (who's mostly known for playing Gollum from "The Lord of the Rings" films and Caesar from the "Planet of the Apes" reboot series), "Breathe" casts Garfield as a 28-year-old Robin Cavendish, who is suddenly paralyzed from the neck down as a result of polio.

Now confined to a hospital bed and requires a respirator to breathe, Cavendish is encouraged by his adoring wife, Diana (played by Golden Globe-winning actress Claire Foy, from Netflix's "The Crown"), to continue fighting for his life and not give up. Cavendish devotes his time and energy to advocating for paralyzed patients, demanding better living conditions and medical treatments, which at the time were terribly depressing.

Co-starring Tom Hollander, Diana Rigg, and Hugh Bonneville, "Breathe" is produced by veteran British film producer Jonathan Cavendish (Bridget Jones's Diary, Elizabeth: The Golden Age), who is, in fact, the son of Robin and Diana Cavendish.

"Breathe" will open in U.S. theaters on October 13th. The film will also open this year's BFI London Film Festival in early October.

Andy Serkis brings to life the inspiring true love story between Robin Cavendish (Academy Award-nominee Andrew Garfield) and his wife Diana (Golden Globe-Winner Claire Foy), an adventurous couple who refuse to give up in the face of a devastating disease. When Robin is struck down by polio at the age of 28, he is confined to a hospital bed and given only a few months to live. With the help of Diana's twin brothers (Tom Hollander) and the groundbreaking ideas of inventor Teddy Hall (Hugh Bonneville), Robin and Diana dare to escape the hospital ward to seek out a full and passionate life together -- raising their young son, traveling and devoting their lives to helping other polio patients.
