Hugh Jackman's days of consorting with mutants are likely over, but that doesn't mean the former "X-Men" star won't be seen hanging out with a brand-new group of misfits and freaks later this year.

Jackman portrays legendary 19th-century circus promoter P. T. Barnum in the first trailer for "The Greatest Showman," the forthcoming musical adaptation of Barnum's life story, which is tracing the early days of the Barnum & Bailey Circus. (The act would later merge with Ringling Bros. and become known as "The Greatest Show on Earth!")

Marking the feature directorial debut of visual effects artist and commercial director Michael Gracey, the film also stars Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya.

"The Greatest Showman" will feature songs from acclaimed songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who both share an Academy Award win for "La La Land." They also wrote the music for the Tony-winning musical "Dear Evan Hansen."

The film is scheduled to open in theaters on December 25th.
