Despite suffering devastating life-changing injuries, Jake Gyllenhaal continues to stand tall and strong in the heart-wrenching trailer for the Boston Marathon bombing drama "Stronger."

Inspired by the inspirational true story of Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, the film casts Gyllenhaal as Bauman, a working-class Boston man who was standing at the finishing line, cheering on his Marathon-running girlfriend (played by the Emmy-winning star of "Orphan Black" Tatiana Maslany) when the terrorist attack occurred.

The drama follows Bauman's grueling recovery from the time he realized the blast took both of his legs to his months and months in the hospital to his arduous rehabilitation at home as he struggles to cope with his injuries.

"There was a time in the hospital when I just wanted to give up," says Gyllenhaal in the above trailer. "And now I just want to live."

Two-time Oscar-nominated actress Miranda Richardson co-stars as Bauman's mother, Patty Bauman, in the upcoming film, which is based on the best-selling book by Jeff Bauman and Bret Witter.

Directed by prolific filmmaker David Gordon Green (Our Brand Is Crisis, Pineapple Express, Prince Avalanche), "Stronger" arrives in theaters on September 22nd.
