Move over, Jack Ryan and Jack Bauer. 'Cause there's a new young CIA counter-terrorism agent and he's willing to risk everything to "eliminate the target."

In the upcoming CIA thriller "American Assassin," Dylan O'Brien (star of the "Maze Runner" film franchise) plays Mitch Rapp, a young, vengeful American seeking retribution for his girlfriend's murder following a terrorist attack. Mitch has even gone so far as to track down terrorists on his own. But when his actions attract the attention of an eagle-eyed CIA recruiter (Sanaa Lathan, from TV's "Shots Fired"), Mitch is offered the opportunity of a lifetime -- to join the CIA.

Eager to prove himself as a worthy recruit, Mitch undergoes a grueling training program taught by a tough, no-bullshit CIA instructor (played by Michael Keaton). His job is to turn Mitch into a bonafide CIA assassin. And his first mission is to hunt down a rogue operative (True Detective's Taylor Kitsch) who has recently gone astray.

Set up as a possible franchise starter, "American Assassin" is based on the 2010 best-selling spy novel by late author Vince Flynn. The Mitch Rapp character actually has been established in an ongoing series of 16 books, of which the last two installments have been written by author Kyle Mills, following Flynn's death in 2013 from cancer.

Michael Cuesta, the Emmy-winning producer/director of Showtime's "Homeland" and who helmed the Jeremy Renner-starring newsman thriller "Kill the Messenger," directs "American Assassin," which is slated for a September 14th theatrical release.

synopsis:
AMERICAN ASSASSIN follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.
