From Stephen Frears, the acclaimed English director of "The Queen," "Philomena" and "Florence Foster Jenkins," comes a new biographical drama about the extraordinary, yet unexpected friendship between Queen Victoria and her twenty-four-year-old Indian-Muslim servant Abdul Karim.

Reuniting with Frears for the first time since working together on 2013's "Philomena," Oscar-winner Dame Judi Dench stars in the 1887-set British movie, portraying the aging but still fervent Queen Victoria. While Bollywood actor Ali Fazal tackles the role of India-born Abdul Karim, the monarch's personal and valued attendant who was swiftly promoted to the position of "Munshi" -- her teacher and closest advisor in Indian affairs. Suffice it to say, their unique friendship was highly frowned upon by the royal family.

Co-starring Michael Gambon, Eddie Izzard, and Adeel Akhtar, "Victoria & Abdul" is penned by writer Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, War Horse) and was based off the book of the same name by author Shrabani Basu.

The film will be coming to theaters on September 22nd.

synopsis:
The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria's (Academy Award winner Judi Dench) remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.
