So what is visionary director Neill Blomkamp up to these days?

Well, it seems the filmmaker of such visually stunning science-fiction films as "District 9," "Elysium," and "Chappie" has launched a new production company called "Oats Studios." And the project, evidently, is producing a series of experimental short films for the internet.

Blomkamp also premiered the first trailer for the first volume of these experimental shorts on YouTube yesterday (watch it above), which features some pretty mind-blowing imagery that includes a mean-looking reptilian alien, soldiers from an alternate Vietnam War timeline, and a couple of scenes with Dakota Fanning and Sigourney Weaver in a war-ravaged future.

On his official Twitter account (@NeillBlomkamp), the "District 9" director has recently stated that he's thinking of releasing these experimental shorts through the online video-game store Steam (store.steampowered.com). Blomkamp also said that "Volume 1" could eventually be released on YouTube for free as each experimental shorts are serving as proof-of-concept ideas for possible feature films.

Last October, Blomkamp directed a 13-minute internet short for BMW films, starring Clive Owen and Dakota Fanning. And the director's first brush with notoriety came in the early 2000s with several well-received short films, two of which were later developed into Hollywood features (District 9 and Chappie). So, you can say Blomkamp knows a thing or two about making a successful film career out of viral videos.
