"Arrested Development" actress Alia Shawkat is nearly swallowed up by a tsunami of grief and pain in the trailer for "Paint It Black," a highly stylized tragedy drama that marks the directorial debut of actress Amber Tamblyn.

Co-starring Janet McTeer with Alfred Molina and Rhys Wakefield, the film is an adaptation of the novel by "White Oleander" author Janet Fitch, in which Tamblyn displays a keen eye for strong visual composition. Unconsciously (or maybe consciously) Tamblyn, the director, appears to echo the style of Billy Wilder's film noir "Sunset Boulevard," fusing that with doses of modern-day L.A. noirs, such as Nicolas Winding Refn's dark Hollywood escapade "Drive."

In the movie, Shawkat plays Josie, a young Los Angeles runaway who, after learning that her boyfriend (Wakefield) has committed suicide, finds herself locking horns with her dead beau's angry, grief-stricken, and deeply unhinged mother (McTeer).

"Paint It Black" is currently playing in Los Angeles and New York. Watch the newly-released trailer, above.
