One grew up on the gang-infested streets of South Central Los Angeles. The other came from the tough, blue-collar section of Brooklyn, New York. One was innovating hip-hop music with gangsta rap. The other was a successful rock-'n'-roll mogul known for working with such rock stars as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, John Lennon, and U2.

Together, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine had an unlikely partnership, but it's a partnership that forever changed the music business, as well as the headphones and speakers industry when they sold their Beats Electronics company to Apple for $3 billion in 2014.

"Menace II Society" co-director Allen Hughes, of the Hughes Brothers, explores the extraordinary pairing of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine for a new four-part documentary series for HBO, called "The Defiant Ones."

Featuring exclusive sit-down interviews with Dre and Iovine and their many business associates and colleagues (Eminem, Bono, Snoop Dogg, Tom Petty, Ice Cube, David Geffen, Stevie Nicks, Gwen Stefani, Bruce Springsteen, Trent Reznor, will.i.am and many more), "The Defiant Ones" is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, July 9 on HBO.

The Defiant Ones is a docu-series directed by Allen Hughes that follows the stories of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre -- one the son of a Brooklyn longshoreman, the other straight out of Compton. Featuring interviews with the men themselves and the artists they influenced, the four-part series tracks their improbable partnership and surprising leading roles in a chain of transformative events in contemporary culture.
