Thanks to famed prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike (Yakuza Apocalypse, Audition), the 1990s Japanese manga series "Blade of the Immortal" by writer/illustrator Hiroaki Samura has been brought to life for a live-action big-screen adaptation.

Featuring the blood-drenched tale of a samurai who can't die, the period actioner is marking Miike's 100th film and his return to the samurai genre since his critically acclaimed hits 2012's "Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai" and 2011's "13 Assassins."

The film, starring Japanese singer/actor Takuya Kimura as the titular samurai who wields a ferocious sword and develops a lust for revenge and violence after being cursed with immortality, just premiered last week, out-of-competition, at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Co-starring Hana Sugisaki, Sota Fukushi, Ebizo Ichikawa, Min Tanaka, Yamazaki Tsutomu, and Chiaki Kuriyama, "Blade of the Immortal" doesn't have an official U.S. release date at this time. However, the film was recently acquired by U.S. distributor Magnolia Pictures for their genre label, Magnet Releasing.
