"The Dark Crystal" was one of Jim Henson's passion film projects that unfortunately failed at the box office when it was originally released in 1982. The silver lining is that Henson and Frank Oz's ambitious puppet spectacle ultimately became a cult classic and a childhood favorite for those obsessed with '80s fantasy movies.

It's 35 years later and "The Dark Crystal" continues to resonate with viewers, including French action director Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk, Grimsby), who apparently is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company for a new "Dark Crystal" prequel series that will be debuting on Netflix.

Leterrier is going to executive produce and direct the ten-episode series with the full participation of Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Original "Dark Crystal" concept artist and famed fantasy illustrator Brian Froud will also work as a creative consultant on the forthcoming series, which is scheduled to go into production this fall.

Titled "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance," Netflix announced the project on Thursday. The company also released this teaser (above), which basically offers an eye-popping glimpse of the concept art and character design.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.
