It was one of the breakout hits at this year's Sundance, scoring a high seven-figure deal with Fox Searchlight. The film has been described as "8 Mile" meets "Hustle & Flow" and features a star-making performance by 25-year-old Australian actress Danielle Macdonald, who's being hailed as someone to watch.

Check out the debut trailer for "Patti Cakes," a crowd-pleasing, rags-to-stardom drama about an aspiring New Jersey hip-hop artist (played by Macdonald) who, against all odds, pulls herself up by her own bootstraps and becomes one of the unlikeliest rap stars in the music world.

Written and directed by acclaimed commercial and music-video director Geremy Jasper (it's his feature film debut), "Patti Cakes" also stars comedienne/cabaret singer Bridget Everett (Inside Amy Schumer) as Patti's mother; Mamoudou Athie (Netflix's The Get Down) as Patti's eccentric-looking music producer; newcomer Siddharth Dhananjay as Patti's best friend and Cathy Moriarty as Patti's wheelchair-bound grandma.

The film will be coming to theaters on August 18th.

In a coming-of-age story straight out of Jersey, an unlikely rapper finds her voice as a one-of-a-kind hip-hop legend in the making in PATTI CAKE$, the first feature film from acclaimed commercial and music-video director Geremy Jasper. Set in gritty strip-mall suburbia, PATTI CAKE$ chronicles an underdog’s quest for fame and glory with humor, raw energy and some unforgettable beats.
