If you're a big fan of genre films, particularly the ones that came from the 1980s -- then, actress Dee Wallace probably holds a special place in your heart, at least a special place in your childhood memories. She is widely known for playing Elliott's mother in Steven Spielberg's classic "E.T." Wallace also played the mother in the Stephen King canine thriller "Cujo." And let's not forget her memorable roles in such cult horror hits as the original "The Hills Have Eyes," "The Howling," and "Critters."

Wallace is once again playing the matriarch of a troubled, dysfunctional family in the new darkly comic Australian horror "Red Christmas," for which a trailer has been released.

The indie thriller, which seems like a throwback to those blood-gushing splatter films of the '80s and '90s, is written and directed by Australian comedian Craig Anderson, who's making his feature directorial debut.

Anderson is mostly known for starring and directing television comedies in his home country of Australia but apparently has always been a huge horror fan. He certainly lucked out when casting Wallace as the lead, a high-strung mother named Diane, who has arranged a special family holiday reunion, only to have her plans completely come undone when a surprise mystery guest suddenly shows up with an ax. Wallace not only stars in the film but also serves as a producer.

"Red Christmas" is coming off a festival run that included screenings at the 2016 Fantasia Fest as well as the 2016 FrightFest. The film, picked up by U.S. indie distributor Artsploitation Films, will be getting a limited theatrical release in August before arriving on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD on October 17th.

synopsis:
Horror legend Dee Wallace (The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, E.T., Cujo, Critters) stars as the stressed-out mother of a squabbling family, gathered together in a remote Outback estate on Christmas Eve. When a mysterious, deformed young man named Cletus appears at their door, things soon change from petty insults to bloody, imaginatively orchestrated violence as Wallace attempts to protect her family from the vengeful intruder. The film deliriously infuses comedy, dark family secrets with outlandish gore and adds the always controversial subject of abortion in its blood-stained mix.
