During World War II, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill became one of the greatest wartime leaders in history. So, it's hard to imagine that, at one, critical point during the war, his stance and opinions about warfare strategy were being undermined and criticized by the top military leaders of the Allied Forces.

Just when Allied soldiers are about to storm the beaches of Normandy, this increasingly tense war-room clash between Churchill and U.S. General Dwight Eisenhower seems to be the crux of the new British historical drama, "Churchill," which casts veteran Scottish actor Brian Cox as a war-weary Churchill and "Mad Men" actor John Slattery as a gung-ho Eisenhower.

"The invasion of France must be stopped," Cox's Churchill says in a newly released U.S. trailer for the upcoming WWII drama. To which Slattery's Eisenhower quickly retorts, "No sir, you must be stopped!" Hey, nobody said planning the most significant and important battle in history was going to be a walk in the park.

The film, directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (The Railway Man), also stars two-time Oscar nominee Miranda Richardson as Churchill's fiercely loyal wife, Clemmie, who serves as his biggest supporter and confidant.

Co-starring Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children), James Purefoy (The Following), Richard Durden (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell), and Julian Wadham (Outlander), "Churchill" will be released in select U.S. theaters beginning June 2nd with a U.K. release to follow on June 16th.

synopsis:
June 1944. Allied Forces stand on the brink: a million soldiers are secretly assembled on the south coast of Britain, poised to invade Nazi-occupied Europe. One man stands in their way: Winston Churchill. Fearful of repeating, on his disastrous command, the mass slaughter of 1915, when over 500,000 soldiers were killed on the beaches of Gallipoli. Exhausted by years of war and plagued by depression, Churchill is a shadow of the hero who has resisted Hitler's Blitzkrieg. Should the D-Day landings fail, he is terrified he’ll be remembered as the architect of carnage. Only the unflinching support of Churchill's brilliant, unflappable wife Clementine can halt the Prime Minister’s physical and mental collapse.
