In the late 1970s and early '80s, the only way a struggling stand-up comic can turn into an overnight sensation is when he or she landed the highly coveted spot on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. But in order to do that, you had to first impress Mitzi Shore, the hard-to-impress owner of the world-famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, who, at the time, was probably the most influential figure in comedy.

Academy Award-winning actress Melissa Leo, of "The Fighter" fame, isn't necessarily portraying Mitzi, though she is playing a thinly-veiled version of the devilish dynamo in Showtime's new series "I'm Dying Up Here," which is loosely based on the non-fiction best-seller of the same name by LA Times journalist William Knoedelseder.

The ten-episode comedy-drama, which is created by David Flebotte (Masters of Sex, Desperate Housewives) and in which comedian Jim Carrey is serving as one of the leading executive producers, will send viewers back to the golden age of stand-up comedy where real comedians told actual jokes to actual crowds of people, preferably people who consumed a lot of alcoholic beverages.

Featuring a diverse cast of professional stand-ups mixed with talented comic actors, "I'm Dying Up Here" is due to premiere on Sunday, June 4th on Showtime. Watch a new trailer, above.

synopsis:
The new one-hour SHOWTIME drama series I'M DYING UP HERE explores L.A.'s famed ‘70s stand-up comedy scene where the careers of legends such as David Letterman, Jay Leno and Richard Pryor were launched. The series delves into the inspired, damaged and complicated psyches of those who stand alone in front of an audience "dying" for fame, fortune and, with any luck, a shot on Johnny Carson.

I’M DYING UP HERE follows a fictional group of competitive but close-knit comedians, all of whom are mentored by "Goldie" (Leo), a brassy comedy club owner who rules over her business with an iron fist, but nurtures her comedians with tough love. For Goldie and her crew, there's truly no such thing as an easy laugh.
