Having no one to call for help is probably the worst thing about surviving on your own. Although, if you're living in a terrifying new world where civilization has just collapsed, having no one to call for help is probably the smartest thing about surviving on your own.

In the gritty British thriller "The Survivalist," Irish actor Martin McCann (from "71" and the HBO miniseries "The Pacific") plays a lone survivor trying to stay alive during the aftermath of a mysterious apocalyptic event. Having successfully constructed a small, private compound in the middle of the forest, his personal security becomes compromised when an older woman intruder (Olwen Fouere) suddenly emerges with a tempting trade offer, which involves her young submissive companion (played by model-turned-actress Mia Goth, from "A Cure for Wellness").

First-time feature writer-director Stephen Fingleton has earned strong accolades for his nail-biting work on "The Survivalist," which spent a majority of last year running on the festival circuit.

Acquired by IFC Films, the movie will be released in U.S. theaters and VOD on May 19th. Watch the trailer, above.
