Clowns are scary as hell -- that's a given. But a clown that came from the mind of Stephen King -- well, that's the stuff of your worst nightmares.

Check out the very first trailer for "IT," the highly anticipated big-screen adaptation of Stephen King's enormously popular 1986 horror novel about a demonic monster clown named Pennywise who terrorizes a group of childhood friends as they grow up in a small, suburban town in Maine.

Swedish actor Bill Skarsgard, the younger brother of Alexander and son of Stellan, who is perhaps best known for starring in Netflix's short-lived supernatural series "Hemlock Grove," portrays Pennywise in the upcoming film, which is directed by Argentine horror director Andres Muschietti, of "Mama" fame.

Among the young actors playing the children include Jaeden Lieberher (St. Vincent, Midnight Special), Finn Wolfhard (Netflix's Stranger Things), Sophia Lillis (37), Wyatt Oleff (Guardians of the Galaxy), Chosen Jacobs (TV's Hawaii Five-0), Nicholas Hamilton (Captain Fantastic), Jeremy Ray Taylor (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip), and Jack Dylan Grazer (Tales of Halloween).

King's book was originally turned into a two-part TV miniseries in 1990, which became a cult favorite largely due to Tim Curry's terrifying yet unforgettable performance as Pennywise.

The film version of "IT" is due to hit theaters on September 8th.

New Line Cinema’s horror thriller “IT,” directed by Andrés Muschietti (Mama), is based on the hugely popular Stephen King novel of the same name, which has been terrifying readers for decades.

When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.
