Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets — New Trailer

Space, the final frontier. Where only a few brave filmmakers have gone before, let alone have gone twice.

For his latest eye-popping feature, Luc Besson, the visionary French filmmaker of "Lucy," "Leon: The Professional," and "La Femme Nikita," has returned to space ... or rather, the space-opera genre for the first time since his 1997 groundbreaking sci-fi action movie "The Fifth Element."

Starring Dane DeHaan (A Cure for Wellness) and Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad), "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is Besson's big-budget adaptation of a long-running 1970s French graphic novel series, "Valerian and Laureline," created by French comic book legends Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres, which centers on two highly skilled operatives who travel the galaxy through time and space as they become the defenders of the universe.

It's been a passion project for Besson since childhood, and it's been something he's been trying to bring to the screen since working on "The Fifth Element." Besson reportedly had scrapped an earlier version of the script after he saw James Cameron's space-set blockbuster "Avatar" for the first time. However, it seems the experience only further inspired Besson to push his vision in a new and better direction.

In addition to DeHaan and Delevingne who star as agents Valerian and Laureline, respectively, the cast also features Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, Alain Chabat, Mathieu Kassovitz, Kris Wu, Herbie Hancock, John Goodman, and Rutger Hauer.

A brand-new trailer has dropped today (watch it above) for Besson's epic film, which is slated for the summer, hitting theaters on July 21st.

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS is the visually spectacular new adventure film from Luc Besson, the legendary director of The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, based on the ground-breaking comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers.

In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha -- an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.
