Though it's been over twenty years, people have remained fascinated by the horrifying death of six-year-old pageant star JonBenet Ramsey.

In the Sundance sensation "Casting JonBenet," documentary filmmaker Kitty Green (Ukraine Is Not a Brothel) examines the unsolved 1996 murder, in which JonBenet was originally reported missing and feared kidnapped on Christmas night but was later found the next day lying dead on the basement floor of her family estate in Boulder, Colorado.

The fact that JonBenet's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, were less than cooperative during the homicide investigation created a cloud of suspicion over the couple. It also caused many to come up with their own theories about the murder.

In what is essentially a true-crime documentary for Netflix, "Casting JonBenet" puts a fresh twist on the genre by reenacting several factual events of the crime but also dramatizing a number of murder theories, while employing local Colorado actors to portray the Ramsey family.

"Casting JonBenet" made a huge splash at this year's Sundance Film Festival. It's now scheduled to stream on Friday, April 28th on Netflix. Watch the trailer, above.

synopsis:
In 1996, Boulder, Colorado was rocked by the mysterious death of six-year-old pageant queen, JonBenet Ramsey. Two decades later, director Kitty Green returns to audition local actors, unpacking how each remembers and relates to the ill-fated Ramsey family. A darkly moving exploration of crime, guilt and personal bias, Casting JonBenet expertly blurs the lines between documentary and drama.
