She was sleeping when they took power. But "Mad Men" star Elisabeth Moss is now awake. And she's ready to "suffer for the cause of righteousness."

Check out the official full-length trailer for Hulu's new dystopian series "The Handmaid's Tale," in which Moss plays a "handmaid" named Offred, who is being pushed into a life of religious servitude after America falls under the control of a totalitarian theocracy.

The ten-episode drama, spearheaded by TV writer-producer Bruce Miller (The 100, Eureka), is the small-screen adaptation of the classic 1985 novel of the same name by award-winning writer Margaret Atwood, who is serving as a consulting producer on the series.

Taking place in the near future, the Hulu series envisions a bleak world where women are stripped of all their rights and systematically placed in religious training camps where they're assigned menial jobs. "Handmaids" are a selected group of women whose sole purpose is to bear the children of their Commanders.

In this case, Moss' Offred is under the orders of Commander Fred Waterford (played by "American Horror Story" actor Joseph Fiennes) whose wife, Serena Joy (played by Yvonne Strahovski, from the series "Dexter" and "Chuck"), is unable to have children of her own.

Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer, and Alexis Bledel are among the ensemble cast of the show, in which the first three episodes are directed by cinematographer-turned-director Reed Morano (Meadowland).

"The Handmaid's Tale" premieres on Hulu beginning Wednesday, April 26th.

synopsis:
Adapted from Margaret Atwood's influential and acclaimed novel, THE HANDMAID'S TALE is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted religious fundamentalism that treats women as property of the state. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred is a Handmaid in the Commander's household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world. In this terrifying society where one wrong word could end her life, Offred navigates between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids -- where anyone could be a spy for Gilead -- all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.
