"There is no 'innocent' explanation," Robert De Niro says in a new teaser trailer for the forthcoming HBO film "The Wizard of Lies," which is giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in American history masterminded by now-infamous New York financier Bernard Madoff.

De Niro portrays Madoff while Michelle Pfeiffer is Madoff's wife, Ruth, in this cable movie adaptation of the best-selling investigative book of the same name written by financial journalist Diana B. Henriques.

The movie is helmed by Barry Levinson, the Oscar-winning director of "Rain Man" who also directed HBO's acclaimed Jack Kevorkian biopic "You Don't Know Jack" with Al Pacino.

"The Wizard of Lies" features Alessandro Nivola (Selma, American Hustle) and Nathan Darrow (Netflix's House of Cards) as Madoff's sons, Mark and Andrew, while Lily Rabe (FX's American Horror Story), Kristen Connolly (CBS' Zoo), and Hank Azaria round out the cast.

The HBO film is set to premiere on Saturday, May 20th.

In 2008, stockbroker, investment advisor, and financier Bernie Madoff made headlines around the world when he was arrested for perpetrating perhaps the largest financial fraud in U.S. history.

HBO Films' THE WIZARD OF LIES examines Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme -- his deception, lies, and cover-up, all as the financier's wife and sons are catapulted into a harsh and unrelenting spotlight.
