Acclaimed English actress Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) is famed Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis in the newly released trailer for the 1930s-set biopic "Maudie," which also stars Ethan Hawke as the ill-tempered local farmer who eventually became her husband.

The Nova Scotia-set drama, which premiered to strong reviews in September at both the Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals, chronicles Maud's early life working as a live-in housemaid for a cranky fish peddler, named Everett Lewis, whom she would quickly marry. Also during her time with Everett, Maud began her art career, developing her own hand-painted style of folk artwork, despite suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis which had affected her hands and spine.

Co-starring Kari Matchett (TV's Covert Affairs), Gabrielle Rose (The Sweet Hereafter), Zachary Bennett (Cube Zero), and Billy MacLellan (Syfy's Defiance), "Maudie" is directed by Irish helmer Aisling Walsh from a script by TV producer/writer Sherry White (Orphan Black, The Catch).

"Maudie" will first open in Canada on April 14th before arriving in US theaters on June 16th.

synopsis:
MAUDIE, based on a true story, is an unlikely romance in which the reclusive Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke) hires a fragile yet determined woman named Maudie (Sally Hawkins) to be his housekeeper. Maudie, bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, yearns to be independent, to live away from her protective family and she also yearns, passionately, to create art. Unexpectedly, Everett finds himself falling in love. MAUDIE charts Everett’s efforts to protect himself from being hurt, Maudie’s deep and abiding love for this difficult man and her surprising rise to fame as a folk painter.
