James Franco is an unorthodox doctor with unorthodox methods in the trailer for "The Institute," a late 19th-century-set psychological melodrama that stars newcomer Allie Gallerani as a young mentally-ill woman who has just checked herself into a spooky wellness clinic where patients are frequently whipped and tortured. Talk about shock therapy!

While appearing in the film as the head physician, Franco also serves as the producer and co-director, sharing helming duties with his former NYU film-school collaborator Pamela Romanowsky. She also directed Franco in the 2015 indie drama "The Adderall Diaries."

In what appears to be a cheap knockoff of "The Wicker Man" and "Shutter Island," the film seemingly emits a sense of dread and despair, but not necessarily for the right reasons.

"The Institute" co-stars Tim Blake Nelson, Lori Singer, Scott Haze, Joe Pease, Tamzin Brown, Josh Duhamel, and Eric Roberts. The film will have a limited theatrical release on March 3rd.
