BET is kicking off the start of Black History Month with an epic three-night mini-series about the life of Nelson Mandela, in which Laurence Fishburne portrays the legendary South African anti-apartheid leader.

Set to debut this week, "Madiba," which is a title that refers to Mandela's African nickname, is a six-hour docudrama based on two autobiographies, charting both Mandela's life and his efforts to further the anti-apartheid movement.

Directed by veteran TV and film director Kevin Hooks (Prison Break, 24, Passenger 57, Fled), "Madiba" also stars Orlando Jones (Sleepy Hollow) as South African activist leader Oliver Tambo, David Harewood (Supergirl) as South African activist Walter Sisulu, and South African actress Terry Pheto (Tsotsi) as Winnie Mandela

Part one of the mini-series is airing this Wednesday, February 1st on the BET network. Parts two and three are slated for February 8th and 15th. Watch the trailer, above.

synopsis:
Madiba, based on two Mandela autobiographies, Conversations With Myself and Nelson Mandela by Himself, tells the most personal and comprehensive story of Mandela's life, focusing on the man and his innermost thoughts and fears as he fought and sacrificed for freedom to become an international icon.

While many recognize Mandela as the face of the Anti-Apartheid Movement, this mini-series also pays homage to the many lesser known men and women who sacrificed and suffered alongside of him in South Africa's quest for freedom.
