A young infected girl could be the key to saving the world from the zombie apocalypse. That is ... if it isn't already too late.
Here's the new U.S. trailer for the British post-apocalyptic zombie thriller "The Girl with All the Gifts," starring Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace), Paddy Considine (In America), and newcomer Sennia Nanua as a special 10-year-old girl named Melanie, who's being kept under close military surveillance because she possesses unique gifts. These gifts include having all the major traits of a zombified victim, but none of its adverse effects.
Close, Arterton, Considine play human survivors (a military scientist, a teacher, and a military officer) trying to decide on whether Melanie is someone they need to learn from or someone they need to be afraid of. In either case, Melanie might be the only person in the world who can both walk among the living and the dead.
Based on the best-selling horror novel of the same name by British comic book and sci-fi writer M.R. Carey, the film is helmed by British TV director Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders, Sherlock, Doctor Who) from a script that was adapted by Carey himself.
"The Girl with All the Gifts," which opened back in September in the UK, is now making its way to the States in a couple of weeks. It will premiere exclusively on DirecTV's On-demand service beginning January 26. The film will also hit U.S. theaters and VOD on February 24.
The near future; humanity has been all but destroyed by a mutated fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh-eating "hungries". Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects.
At an army base in rural England, this group of unique children are being studied, subjected to cruel experiments by biologist Dr. Caldwell. Despite having been infected with the zombie pathogen that has decimated the world, these children retain normal thoughts and emotions. And while still being subject to the craving for human flesh that marks the disease these second- generation "hungries" are able to think and feel making them a vital resource in the search for a cure.
The children attend school lessons daily, guarded by the ever watchful Sergeant Parks. But one little girl, Melanie, stands out from the rest. Melanie is special. She excels in the classroom, is inquisitive, imaginative and loves her favourite teacher Miss Justineau.
When the base falls, Melanie escapes along with Miss Justineau, Sergeant Parks and Dr. Caldwell. Against the backdrop of a blighted Britain, Melanie must discover what she is and ultimately decide both her own future and that of the human race.
