James Franco has conflicting feelings about his sexuality in the trailer for "I Am Michael," a based-on-a-true-story drama about a prominent gay activist (Franco) in San Francisco who, after becoming a born-again Christian, decides to change his sexual identity to live his life as a straight man.

"Star Trek" star Zachary Quinto plays Franco's former boyfriend, while Emma Roberts (Scream Queens) is the young religious woman who Franco eventually marries.

Based on The New York Times article "My Ex-Gay Friend" by Benoit Denizet-Lewis -- which told the controversial story of former gay men's magazine editor Michael Glatze, the film is co-written and directed by indie filmmaker Justin Kelly, who just worked with Franco on the true-crime, gay-themed thriller "King Cobra" with Christian Slater and Garrett Clayton.

Executive produced by Gus Van Sant and costarring Daryl Hannah, "I Am Michael" will be hitting theaters and VOD on January 27.
