A new "Assassin's Creed" trailer offers another look at Michael Fassbender in action as Callum Lynch, an incarcerated man with a very special lineage.

When forced to test out an experimental machine, called "Animus," which enables users to immersively experience the memories of their centuries-old ancestor, Callum travels back 500 years in the past -- all the way back to the Spanish Inquisition -- and becomes a pivotal part in the clandestine war between the Templars and the Assassins.

His mission? Well, according to the new trailer, Callum is to retrieve an ancient and powerful artifact (known as "the Apple of Eden") of which his great-great-great-grandfather had sworn to protect centuries ago.

Based on Ubisoft's best-selling video game franchise (although, the Callum Lynch character is not a part of the video game), the film also stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson.

Directed by Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, Snowtown), "Assassin's Creed" is scheduled to land in theaters December 21,

synopsis:
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
