"Selma" actor David Oyelowo and "Gone Girl" actress Rosamund Pike star in a new historical drama about the real-life interracial marriage between Botswana's first president Seretse Khama and British clerk Ruth Williams. And Fox Searchlight has just released its first U.S. trailer.

Directed by acclaimed British filmmaker Amma Asante, of "Belle" fame, and written by "Eye in the Sky" scribe Guy Hibbert, "A United Kingdom" chronicles Botswana royal Seretse Khama's (played by Oyelowo) passionate love affair with a middle-class British white woman, named Ruth Williams (Pike), whom he ended up marrying during the era of apartheid while Botswana was fighting to retain its independence from Britain.

Co-starring Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Tom Felton (Harry Potter), the film, which opened in the U.K. a couple of weeks ago, will be coming to the States on February 17.

synopsis:
A UNITED KINGDOM tells the inspiring true story of Seretse Khama, the king of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker that he married in 1948 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments. Seretse and Ruth defied family, apartheid and empire -- their love triumphed over every obstacle flung in their path and in so doing they transformed their nation and inspired the world.
