In the new full-length trailer for the HBO limited series "The Young Pope," Jude Law is precisely that ... a young Pope from America, who has extreme views and stringent ideas on how the Catholic church should be run under his watch.

Playing an opposing Cardinal and a bitter traditionalist, James Cromwell calls Law's character "a terrible Pope; the most dangerous in modern times." While others are raising the question of whether the real person in charge is the Pope's closest confidante (who is practically his surrogate mother), Sister Mary (played by Oscar-winner Diane Keaton).

This, of course, only drives the young Pope to launch an aggressive campaign against his enemies and detractors. All the while, paranoia, hostility, fear, and gossip proceed to corrode the souls of everyone involved. Whoa. Who knew the Catholic Church had this much in common with American politics?

Created and directed by Oscar-winning Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty, Youth), the ten-episode limited series, which already premiered internationally in October, will be making its Stateside debut next month, Sunday, January 15, 2017, on the HBO network. The series also stars French actress Cecile De France and Italian actor Silvio Orlando.
