Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson launch a small but fierce anti-Hitler campaign in the new international trailer for the WWII drama "Alone in Berlin."

Proving that there are no such things as tiny acts of rebellion, the film casts Gleeson and Thompson as Otto and Elise Hampel, a real-life, working-class German couple who, while risking their own lives, stood up against the Nazis by secretly distributing tiny anti-war protest cards all around the city of Berlin, much to the chagrin of the German authorities.

"Captain America: Civil War" actor Daniel Bruhl, who will also be seen in another WWII film in next year's "The Zookeeper's Wife," co-stars as a Nazi detective in charge of finding and stopping the person behind the anti-Nazi postcards.

Swiss actor-turned-filmmaker Vincent Perez co-wrote and directed the film, which is adapted from "Every Man Dies Alone," the 1947 non-fiction book by Hans Fallada, considered as one of the first anti-Nazi novels published in post-WWII Germany. It wasn't until recently, in 2009, that the book was finally translated into English, which exposed Otto and Elise Hampel's nearly forgotten story for American audiences.

"Alone in Berlin" will open internationally in March. As of yet, there's no official U.S. release date.

synopsis:
Based on the international best-seller by Hans Fallada (Every Man Dies Alone), ALONE IN BERLIN shines the light on two ordinary German people who made an extraordinary impact. Berlin, 1940. Working class couple Otto and Anna Quangel (Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson) receive the news that their only son has been killed on the battlefield. Already disillusioned with The Führer and The Fatherland, the loss of their son proves the tipping point and Otto begins a campaign of civil disobedience, writing messages on postcards that urge fellow Germans to resist the Nazi regime. Anna soon partners with Otto and together they covertly distribute hundreds of postcards, left in stairwells and mailboxes across the city. At the head of the Gestapo force trying to track down the dissenters is Escherich (Daniel Bruhl) who faces enormous pressure to find, stop and bring the traitors to justice. Acting alone in their unique attempt to turn the tide on German support for the Third Reich, this unassuming couple’s sacrifice became an important element of the German Resistance.
