Amid the horrors of war, Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem find time to fall in love in the first trailer for "The Last Face," a melodramatic love story directed by Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn -- his first directorial effort since helming 2007's acclaimed drama "Into the Wild."

Set against the backdrop of an African civil war, Theron plays a South African aid worker. While working at a refugee camp, she strikes up a budding romance with a Spanish humanitarian doctor, played by Bardem. But as the conflict escalates, their relationship becomes increasingly imbued with dread and despair, ruining any shred of optimism they may have had.

Jared Harris, Adele Exarchopoulos, and Jean Reno co-star.

"The Last Face" is Penn's fourth directed feature -- and to put it bluntly, it's considered Penn's worst film as a director. The drama was widely panned by critics when it premiered back in May at the Cannes Film Festival. And to make matters worse, Penn and Theron called off their engagement and went through a public breakup several months after the film was shot.

"The Last Face" doesn't have an official U.S. release date, but will open internationally in early 2017.

synopsis:
The Last Face centers around a love affair between Dr. Miguel Leon (Academy Award winner, Javier Bardem), a relief-aid doctor, and Dr. Wren Petersen (Academy Award winner, Charlize Theron), the director of an international aid organization.

Set against the devastating backdrop of war-torn Liberia, Miguel and Wren must find a way to keep their relationship alive in extraordinarily difficult conditions battling their mutual passion for the value of life matched by the intensity of their diametrically opposed opinions on how best to solve the conflict that surrounds them.
