Robert De Niro is an old, insult comic angling for a career comeback in the trailer for "The Comedian," the new film from "Ray" director Taylor Hackford.

De Niro taps into his inner Don Rickles to play Jackie Burke, an old-school New York stand-up comic who's seen better days. While serving community service for punching out a heckler, Burke manages to strike up a romantic relationship with a female fan (played by Knocked Up's Leslie Mann). Things are suddenly looking up and Burke soon has a chance to return to the limelight -- but at what cost?

The comedy-drama features a strong supporting cast that includes Danny DeVito, Patti LuPone, Edie Falco, and Harvey Keitel, with a cameo by Billy Crystal.

"The Comedian"will have a limited Oscar-qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles on December 2 before opening across the country on January 13.

synopsis:
An aging comic icon, Jackie (Robert De Niro), has seen better days. Despite his efforts to reinvent himself and his comic genius, the audience only wants to know him as the former television character he once played. Already a strain on his younger brother (Danny DeVito) and his wife (Patti LuPone), Jackie is forced to serve out a sentence doing community service for accosting an audience member. While there, he meets Harmony (Leslie Mann), the daughter of a sleazy Florida real estate mogul (Harvey Keitel), and the two find inspiration in one another, resulting in surprising consequences.
