Scarlett Johansson searches for her past in the first official trailer for the action-packed sci-fi thriller "Ghost in the Shell."

The film, in which Johansson plays "Major," a terrorist-hunting cyborg who uncovers a dark conspiracy concerning her past life, is the much-awaited live-action adaptation of the classic Japanese comic book series created by manga legend Masamune Shirow. The graphic novel was previously turned into an equally classic 1995 animated movie directed by iconic anime helmer Mamoru Oshii.

English commercial director Rupert Sanders, who made his feature directorial debut with 2012's "Snow White and the Huntsman," directs the upcoming movie, which is featuring a top-notch supporting cast that includes Juliette Binoche, Pilou Asbaek, Michael Pitt, Chin Han, Rila Fukushima, and veteran Japanese actor Takeshi Kitano.

"Ghost in the Shell" will be coming to theaters on March 31, 2017.

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, "GHOST IN THE SHELL" follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic's advancements in cyber technology.
