It's been nearly two decades since the release of Luc Besson's much-adored space saga "The Fifth Element." But the veteran French filmmaker, who also gave us the action films "Lucy" and "Leon: The Professional" and who also masterminded the Liam Neeson-starring "Taken" franchise, makes his long-awaited return to the science-fiction genre with next year's space fantasy epic "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets," starring Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) and Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad) as intergalactic agents.
For the past year or so, Besson has been hard at work turning the classic French comic book series "Valerian and Laureline" (created by writer Pierre Christin and illustrator Jean-Claude Mezieres) into a live-action thrill ride. And from the looks of things, Besson just might have a major hit on his hands. Back in the summer, the director premiered the first footage of his movie to adoring fans at San Diego Comic-Con. Now, the rest of the world is getting their first peek as the film's teaser trailer has just been released online.
"Valerian" follows the adventures of Valerian (DeHaan) and Laureline (Delevingne), two space operatives who are trying to prevent clashes from erupting within a major intergalactic metropolis that's currently being occupied by thousands of different alien species. The cast also includes pop singer Rihanna, Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, and John Goodman (as a voice).
The film is coming to theaters next summer on July 27, 2017.
Rooted in the classic graphic novel series, Valerian and Laureline - Visionary writer/director Luc Besson advances this iconic source material into a contemporary, unique and epic science fiction saga.
Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.
Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.
