Time travel. Genetic memories. Assassins. The Spanish Inquisition. And Michael Fassbender. Sure, there's a lot to take in when trying to wrap your head around the plot of the new action-adventure movie "Assassin's Creed," which is based on the popular video-game franchise from Ubisoft.

The fact that Fassbender plays an incarcerated man who is chosen to participate in a time-traveling experiment, in which he experiences the genetic memories of his 15th-century ancestor (an assassin who fought in a secret war between two ancient societies, the Templars and the Assassins) is a little hard to compute. So, it's a good thing that FOX has released a brand-new featurette, which offers a much better explanation of the movie's high-concept premise. Check it out, above.

Directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, The Snowtown Murders) and also starring Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson, "Assassin's Creed" arrives in theaters December 21.

synopsis:
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
